adulthood is just a constant struggle of, “man, i want cookies for breakfast, but I also recognize this is a bad nutritional decision.  On the other hand, the only one who can stop me is me.  i know that fucker’s weaknesses.  i could totally take me in a fight.”

when i was in elementary school, i thought that the reason we were supposed to capitalize the first letter of people’s names was as a sign of respect, so i always refused to capitalize the name of my fourth grade teacher or george bush, because i did not respect them

johnflory asked:

Can you please elaborate more about lesbian shrek? Ive never been more intrigued

fairytalefem Answer:

Yes of course, I have so many feelings about it! Okay so like lesbians are very often perceived by society as ugly and unlovable for not fitting into the expected mold for women and for not catering to men and it’s very easy for lesbians, especially gnc lesbians, to grow up believing that they’re ugly and unlovable for that reason. Shrek has grown up believing the same thing because he fits into the archetype of a monster and has never seen himself portrayed as a hero and has decided to accept what he thinks is his only role. On the other hand Fiona actively rejects and hides the part of herself that she sees as ugly and thinks that if she marries a man then her curse will be broken and she can pretend that she was never an ogre. She too has never seen an ogre get a happy ending and thinks that in order to be happy she has to keep it a secret. This can be very easily read as internalized homophobia and closeting and her parents’ reaction (to send her away until she’s ‘cured’) is a common homophobic narrative. When Shrek is the one to rescue her it feels like a cruel joke from the universe, taunting her with someone who is so openly everything she tries not to be, and she wants nothing to do with him. As they spend more time together though the unabashedly ogre-like way that Shrek acts gives Fiona the comfort to begin letting her guard down and act more ogre-like herself. Even after repressing her ogre side for her entire life Fiona can’t fully deny who she is and even before her secret is revealed it’s clear that there is something that connects the two of them. Fiona plans to 'come out’ to Shrek because seeing him live so freely as an ogre has made her consider for the first time that she might be happier living as her true self than as the princess she’s been raised to be. When Shrek breaks up her comp-het wedding and confesses his love for her he is also confessing his own desire to be loved, which he has suppressed his whole life. They see the parts of each other that society has deemed ugly and see only beauty and the things that have always made them feel othered are what connect them to each other and make them the same. I am not saying that lesbians and ogres are in any way the same but this whole narrative of societal rejection and finding comfort in each other is such an inherently lesbian story arch and I think that it’s very easy to reframe it that way.

TLDR: Shrek is an allegory for internalized lesbophobia and Fiona’s tower is a metaphor for conversion therapy and her turning into an ogre at the end is her accepting her identity as a lesbian

lizard people is the most benign possible antisemitism but for some reason it hits me harder than overtly malicious antisemitism, i think bc it’s The Case Study of how easily an antisemitic trope can just become a normal part of everybodys vocab and after that ppl will fight you endlessly on whether or not its actually antisemitic

i think also, to people who are not familiar with antisemitism (through experience or study or both), antisemitism often comes across as cartoonish or wildly antiquated, so that people are inclined to dismiss it as toothless. i mean, lizard people is super fucking silly. or, people don’t really believe jews drink the blood of christian children anymore, that’s medieval. then its on jews to put in the legwork pointing out the use of lizard people to describe zuckerberg’s physical appearance, how qanon is modern blood libel, how easter pogroms can’t really be divorced from ‘the war on christmas’. and then, especially because conspiracy theory is now such a jokey quirky thing to so many people (”what’s your favorite conspiracy theory”) and not understood as an integral aspect of modern antisemitism, jews are suddenly The Fun Police, even tho all of these things share the same logic and imagery that drove an entire genocide not even a century ago

daily reminder that there is absolutely nothing normal about being expected to waste a majority of your life at a corporation to survive instead of indulging in better life experiences ✨

In the 1960s it was a common speculation that by 1980 the typical work week would consist of 4 days. And by the year 2000 we’d be working no more than 3 days a week.

Because of computerization, automation, and better efficiencies in workflow.

Guess what happened instead?
